Graceful

I don't often photograph people as the main subject. But it's good to stretch out of the comfort zone every so often. Especially when there's an opportunity to work with someone such as the lovely and graceful Benazir, pictured here. Copyright © Royce Howland. All rights reserved.

Laying It Out

Jim is a Vietnam vet. He hangs out on the streets but keeps up with the news, hits the Internet and tells people about his philosophy. We encountered him laying it out in Jerome, Arizona. Copyright © Royce Howland. All rights reserved.

The Master Cowboy Storyteller

We got to spend over an hour with Bill, a truly fabulous western character from Scottsdale, Arizona. He was every inch a cowboy & rancher, and also a true Irishman with the gift of story-telling. Copyright © Royce Howland. All rights reserved.

A Cowboy Needs A Good Horse

A modern day cowboy named Joe spends a moment settling down his horse after demonstrating some lasso work. A cowboy needs a good horse... and a horse needs a good cowboy. Copyright © Royce Howland. All rights reserved.

Carding the Wool

Visiting Monument Valley with a Navajo guide, we had some experiences that aren't possible just driving the normal tourist road. This included meeting an elderly Navajo weaver, Susie. It was very dark in the hogan, with only a bit of natural light coming in through the entry way. But it lit up her face when, as she carded some wool, she gave a little smile towards her daughter Effie just for an instant. Copyright © Royce Howland. All rights reserved.

New Haircut Done Old School

In Flagstaff, Arizona, you can get a haircut by an experienced hand in this old-school barber shop. Viewing the scene firsthand, I felt like I had stepped through a portal and gone back several decades in time. Copyright © Royce Howland. All rights reserved.
